Over the centuries, the house at 29, Rossmarkt changed its owners and function a number of times. In 1686 it was bought by members of the Council. Then it was taken over by the market as a residence for soldiers – it became what was known as a “quasi-barracks”. This relieved a burden on the residents, who were required to quarter the military in their homes. Later the physikus, or doctor, lived here. The syndikus also made use of the house. This was someone who could read and write and discharged a range of legal and political functions.

Since 2017 the building has been known as the Charlotte Taitl house. It houses the town library and the education centre and memorial for victims of National Socialism in Ried.
