Ried Town Gallery provides a representative cross section of Innviertel artistic work. The collection includes works from the late 19th century to the present day.
The Innviertel Artists’ Guild had a strong influence on artistic activity in the region. It was founded in Braunau in 1923 and was the first artists’ association in Upper Austria referring to a region. Economic and cultural hardship after the First World War led many artists to move to the provinces. Founder members included Hugo von Preen, Aloys Wach, Wilhelm Dachauer and Louis Hofbauer. The first exhibition was held in 1924.
When the stock of the Ried Museum Society moved to the new Folklore Building from the high school on the Promenade, those rooms became vacant. Max Bauböck established the Innviertel Gallery here in 1934. In 1938, the Innviertel artists’ guild was – as were all clubs and societies – abolished. The gallery was therefore of great benefit to art in the town. After the Second World War, the Artists’ Guild was started up again. Artists, musicians, writers and architects continue to be members of the association today.
