The passage to the next room is surrounded by votive images. These were donated to places of pilgrimage on pilgrimages of prayer or thanks.

A pilgrimage of prayer was undertaken by people who wanted to have children or who were injured or suffering from an illness.

Pilgrimages of thanks were undertaken by those who had been saved from hardship or distress.

A votive image generally depicts the individual concerned worshipping the image of the saint. The words “ex voto” mean “in order to fulfil a vow”. Sometimes an explanatory text is added.

For example:“The mother almost lost her wits during her travails but through appeal to the Holy Trinity is happily restored to health anno 1770”.
