The Schärding Gate has also had a number of names. When the old fortress moat was still in existence, alders used to grow beyond the gate, and so it was known as Erltor, or Aldergate.

The road through the Schärding Gate leads to the neighbouring municipality of Aurolzmünster, and so the gate was also known as Münster Gate.

The Schärding Gate and the Braunau Gate are the last remaining gates from the former fortress. The fortress itself lost its function over time. The walls were pulled down in 1705.

Market officials controlled the movement of people, goods and freight until 1808, and lived on the upper floors of the Schärding Gate.
