In 1932, the first Ried Weissbier was brewed here in the Braugasthof at 27, Rossmarkt. Johann Lechner trained as a master brewer in Weihenstephan in Bavaria. He set up a six hectolitre brewing pan in his parents’ house: the smallest brewery in Austria. But the inhabitants of Ried took a long time to be convinced by the “Trüben” (or dark) brew. After numerous improvements, Rieder Weisse became one of Upper Austria's best-loved beers. Ried Brewery Weissbier in fact continued to be brewed in this building until 1980. The brewery has been closed down, although it remains in the building. But you can still drink a toast with a Rieder Weissbier.
