Franz Xaver Gruber trained as a teacher at the normal school, gaining his trivial school teaching certificate in 1806. 12 years later he composed the best known song in the world. His melody, Silent Night, was sung for the first time on 24th December 1818. The Oberndorf congregation gathered in front of the church crib to sing it after the Christmas mass. The church is no longer there, but the big Silent Night crib has been preserved. You can admire the masterpiece in the Innviertel Museum of Folklore.
