Linzer Gasse runs east from the lower Hauptplatz. The Linz Gate stood here until 1861. Today, only the Braunau Gate and the Schärding Gate remain. The Linz Gate was also known as the Meat Gate, due to the butchers’ stalls that used to stand outside it.
These had to be located there for hygiene reasons and in order to be close to running water.
The guest house at number 2, Linzer Gasse used to be popularly known as the “guest house to hell”, because of the narrowness of the alleyway and its low, dark entrance passage.
