The devastating Russian campaign of 1812 heralded the end of Napoleon. Ried entered world history on 8th October 1813: King Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria dissolved his pact with Napoleon, forming an alliance with the great powers of Russia, Prussia and Austria. This was set down in the Treaty of Ried. A few days later, Napoleon was conclusively vanquished in the Battle of Leipzig.

A commemorative plaque was erected in the former coffee house to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Treaty. The plaque has since been replaced by a copy. The original is kept in the Innviertel Museum of Folklore.
