Toll station and tax officials worked at number 44, Hauptplatz, collecting customs duties and taxes from traders. Only once they had paid could traders from near and far sell their wares at Ried market.

“Coffee roaster” Franz Xaver Schäffler bought the disused Mauthaus in 1807 and opened the first coffee bar in Ried.

On 15th March 1810, Marie Luise, the daughter of the Austrian Emperor, spent the night in this house. She had just married Napoleon and was on the way from Vienna to Paris.

Three years later Napoleon's downfall was plotted in the same building. The Treaty of Ried was signed here.
