Since 1995, the Lughof intersection has been known as Landshuter Platz in honour of Ried’s twin town. Since 2020 it has been home to the Stadtwächter (town guards), a work of art by Andreas Sagmeister. This was the winning entry in an art competition. The Stadtwächter are geometric sculptures standing 5 metres high. They demonstrate the relationship between the twin towns of Ried and Landshut. The sculptures lean towards each other. The space between the sculptures is in the form of a Bavarian diamond. If you approach from the Kapuzinerberg, you will see the open side of the guard figures. The interior of the sculptures is painted with the current national colours with gradients from red to white and white to blue. Symbols from the coats of arms of the two towns can also be seen:
A detail of one of the three iron helmets on a blue background for Landshut, and a detail of the peasant’s boot on a red background for Ried.
