Guild matters had to be discussed over an open guild chest. These are therefore often equipped with a three-part lock. The chests could only be opened if all three key holders were present. These were the master, the senior journeyman and the official inspector. The guild chest stored important documents such as master craftsman and apprenticeship certificates, trade and guild statutes and the guild cash box.
