Margret Bilger was born in Graz in 1904. She came from an academic background and initially worked in the charitable sector, caring for children who were suffering from bone tuberculosis. She took classes in painting, graphic art and glass painting at the Vienna school of arts and crafts. Her work is characterised by religious and social themes.
In 1939 she settled in Taufkirchen an der Pram, living in the little house she had inherited from her father. She created woodcut series on biblical themes, fairytales and other literary genres. Her works strike a consistently gloomy, eerie note. She eventually modified woodcutting into wood ripping. Her stained glass dealt with her preferred themes. She was part of the circle around Alfred Kubin; he addressed her in many letters as his “dear Bilgerin”.
Margret Bilger died in 1971.
