This crucifix is a particularly fine carving by Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder. It was carved around 1780. Striking features include the ogee shape of the costal arch and the loincloth that flutters from the top right to the bottom left. The anatomically accurate presentation of the body shows every detail, right down to the blood vessels. The stylistic feature of Schwanthaler crucifixes is clearly identifiable in the braced big toe.
