The reverse glass paintings are in impressively luminous colours. The technical challenge here is to paint images that are backwards and laterally reversed. The upper layer, which is visible through the glass, has to be applied first and the background is then applied last.
Reverse glass paintings in the Bavarian/Bohemian/Upper Austrian border region were produced in their thousands by teams of workers. There were workshops in Raimundsreut, Kvilda (Außergefild), Buchers and Sandl in the Mühlviertel.
The little way of the cross on display is in the case next to the window. It was all made by a single painter. Benedikt Felbinger created it in 1842 in Kaltenbach (today Studený in Bohemia) “To the glory of God and in prayer for godly souls”, as he wrote on the back of one of the panels.
