Venice lost its monopoly as a glass producer around 300 years ago.
Slowly but surely, Bohemia grew in prominence to become a major centre for glass production, progressing from medieval green forest glass to clear, cut glass. From the Biedermeier era onwards, flashed glass was prized above all others. This involved overlaying several different layers of coloured glass. Deep cuts and targeted etching carved out artistic patterns from the individual colours, creating gorgeous designs.
