Hubert Fischlhammer was born in Ried in 1925. Ried artist Wilhelm Dachauer helped him gain access to the Munich Academy, but he never studied there. Military service was followed by compulsory Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labour Service).
Fischlhammer was wounded in the war and worked as a newspaper cartoonist and illustrator. From 1962 he attended the Salzburg Summer Academy and other institutions, where he gained major inspiration from Professor Slavi Soucek. His interest in North African landscapes and expressive African art is reflected in his later works. His pictures feature personal symbols, found objects from nature and fabrics.
